A big, blue, land-yacht thing.

Kinja'd!!!

Behold the 1987 Mercury Grand Marquis in all of it’s 5.0L, couch cusion goodness. And I towed it 110km with my Nissan Xterra. Picked this bad boy up for $500 with just 56,000kms on the clock, a one owner car. I bought it as a demo derby car, but a quick once-over shows that she might be a little too clean for that.

The 180mph speedo is a bit optimistic. You should autocross it.

The overhang on the ass-end is too long, and it comes too close to the back of the truck. Plus, when we picked it up, the original plan was just to build a serious demolition derby car with it. But those planes may have changed.

No demo derby! Save the land yachts!

This looks like more of an amazing winter beater than a demo derby car

My grandparents had this same car in these exact colors. They took me to Disney World from Chicago in it when I was 6. I had never been in a car that had cigarette lighters for backseat passengers. I saw a lid, with a button, so I pushed it. It didn’t pop back up, but I didn’t want to tell my Grandparents I was breaking things in their car, so I shut the lid. It popped after that and i realized it came out of the hole. So I pulled it out and promptly burnt my finger. Of course I couldn’t tell them that, so I stuck it back into the spot it was supposed to be and put my finger in my mouth to try to soothe it. “PBJoe, get your finger out of your mouth.” is all I heard for the rest of the day, but I didn’t want to tell them what happened.

To this day my wife is the only family member who knows this story and that’s because a neighbor bought an 80s Grand Marquis.

Behold the 1987 Mercury Grand Marquis

I know nothing about American cars, but is there a typo in there? Shouldn’t that be 1978 or 1967 or something like that? Doesn’t look very 1987 to me.

My friend had an 87 just like that one in high school (circa 2010?) briefly, it blew a head gasket on the highway and he got rid of it. It was followed by a Cutlass Ciera which died, a Honda Accord which did a sweet barrel role at 65mph in a ditch, and a Hyundai Tucson which ate itself.

He now rides a bike.

It is indeed an ‘87. The car debuted in 1979 and remained largely unchanged until 1994. The only major update was a slight cosmetic refresh in ‘88, and the addition of fuel injection on this 5.0L for 1987.

The land yacht gods will smote you if you demo derby that.

We’re still undecided. We have it running, but with a fuel cell. The car sat for over 10 years with a 3/4 tank of gas. The fuel actually fermented around the sock on the fuel pump, turning it into a solid, and the pickup filter had entirely fallen apart. The pump is fried, and the sending unit doesn’t work. Also, there’s a 1/2 inch of sludge coating the tank. I’ve never seen anything like it.

But it runs!

That’s pretty crazy.

Please please please don’t derby it though!

I think you should watch the car chase scene from To Live and Die in L.A.!
